A Closed World Setting?

Hello!

Now we’ve had a little bit of a breather after MF1 and feedback has come in, we’d like to remind all attendees that Menhirs Fate is a Closed World. This means that all characters that exist within it are from that world, and have no knowledge of other fictional settings, be they real world media or other larp settings in character.

Rediscovery of lost information is a key theme of the game, so we aim to make it clear when the areas of exploration within the game are able to be poked. Dungeon encounters may have paperwork that has snippets of lost info, NPCs might bring information from beyond the known boundaries, and plot might endeavour to uncover lost secrets from before the war against the Corrupted and the Fading that has made everyone forget.

When briefing our plot crew, we put a lot of emphasis on not simply making things up. We don’t want to add confusion to the mix by derailing what discoveries are planned to be found, and we want to reward effort through the game levers.

What is a Closed World Setting? This is a term to describe a world with a defined canon, where players have defined rules on what exists and what doesn’t. It helps give a strong foundation for roleplay – players can build off of recognised history and geography, as well as the basic metaphysics of the world. Magic is defined and confined to the eight spheres, and there are no races other than human and those creatures of the Spheres who are described in the wiki or new ones who might make themselves known in uptime.

Everything in player hands is “below the abstraction layer”. We aren’t going to micromanage the specifics of individual characters or groups’ backstories, but ask that they fit with the overall canon of the setting of Elandra.

We’ve also gone over some of the technologies that are and aren’t part of the setting on the link below.
