“What is lost may yet find peace in shadow’s embrace.”
Now completed and standing in solemn stillness, Unicorn’s Rest lies deep within the tangled heart of the Deepwoods of Valdraeth—where the canopy is thick, the air cool and still, and the sun filters down in rare, reverent shafts. The shrine does not announce itself with banners or bells. It waits—patiently, quietly—as though it has always been there, waiting to be found by those who need it most.
Carved into a moss-covered rise, the structure is simple but carefully crafted. Its centerpiece is a stone unicorn, lovingly sculpted by hand, its head bowed in mourning, eyes closed in eternal rest. The figure is ringed with flora—unnaturally bright blooms that open regardless of season, their petals curled inward like clasped hands in prayer. Soft white mushrooms grow along the roots, forming a natural border around the sacred ground.
The shrine was raised by the efforts of a grieving family seeking to heal the wounds of a past misdeed. But since its completion, Unicorn’s Rest has become something greater: a sanctuary for all who carry quiet guilt, unnamed grief, or sorrow too heavy for the roads they travel. Here, travelers and locals alike come to speak their regrets, to light a candle, to leave a token, or simply to be heard by the god who listens in silence.
At the unicorn’s feet lies a low stone altar, where offerings may be made to The Reaper—not in fear, but in hope of being understood. There is no grandeur here, no ritual performance—only a deep, enduring stillness.
It is not a place of judgment. Only of reckoning. And, if one listens carefully through the hush of the woods, perhaps a place where peace might finally be heard.
